The Key Strategic Moment of the FORMULA 1 GRAND PRIX DU CANADA 2015 was the decision by Williams Martini Racing to pit Valtteri Bottas on Lap 28, just after Kimi Räikkönen had spun at the hairpin.

Räikkönen was on new soft tyres, having just made his pit stop and he dropped around seven seconds with the spin. Bottas' crew reacted immediately and it meant that Bottas was able to take on new tyres and return to the circuit in front of Räikkönen when his fellow Finn came through to start Lap 29.

Prior to that, Bottas had been running five seconds behind Räikkönen, who stopped on Lap 26. Without the mistake and Williams' very quick reaction, a podium would have been unlikely."

Race Strategy Briefing

Canada is a fascinating race strategically - there is usually little to choose between the one and two stop strategies in terms of race time, although a two stop is clearly preferable if you can run in clear air, as a front-runner. Overtaking is quite easy on the 350km/h straights, so strategists don’t worry too much about losing time in traffic. Driving a one stop requires a more careful approach in managing tyres, but can work out well as there is a high (60%) chance of a Safety Car. Montreal is the hardest track of the year on brakes and coping strategies are needed towards the end of the race, with cars that now weigh around 700kg and multiple braking events from over 300km/h every lap.
